Monday Moods: Queer Freebie

Monday Moods is a weekly bookish meme created and hosted by Unwrapping Words (aka, me!). The premise is simple: every week, there’s a new ‘mood’, ranging from tropes to genres or actual moods (happy, sad, etc). On a Monday, feel free to post about books on your TBR, books you’d recommend, or a mix – whatever you like – that fits the ‘mood’ prompt. And of course, you can use your own if you’re not fussed on a particular one!

For today’s freebie post, rather than going for something specific, I thought I’d instead spotlight some of the queer books on my TBR I just haven’t had a chance to talk about in previous posts! These are just a few of the queer books I own that I’m really looking forward to reading.

This Week, I’m in the Mood For…
Queer Books!

Sleep Like Death
Kalynn Bayron

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Young Adult
Format: Paperback
Published: 25th June, 2024

I Want to Read This Because Kalynn Bayron is officially one of my favourite authors. Her fantastic fiction typically features Black teen sapphic girls, and this looks to be no different. She can write fantasy, she can write horror, and she writes excellent blends of the two. If you haven’t read her stuff yet, I’ve adored Cinderella is Dead, You’re Not Supposed to Die Tonight, and This Poison Heart.

The Boyfriends Duet
Gabbi Grey

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: 30th October, 2024

I Want to Read This Because partly I want to read more of these kind of small town series, but also this contains two novellas, and I think that’s a really fun idea! The first is a second chance romance, the second is instalove with a daredevil pilot. And if I enjoy this book, there’s more Love in Mission City books waiting for me!

In These Gilded, Ghostly Hearts
Gwendolyn Kiste

Genre: Gothic Horror
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Expected Publication: 15th September, 2026

I Want to Read This Because a queer gothic kind of sequel to The Great Gatsby, used to explore the ideas of obsession and control in the American classic. Yes, please!

Lucy Undying
Kiersten White

Genre: Gothic Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: 10th September, 2024

I Want to Read This Because I’m really intrigued by different takes on Dracula – it’s such an interesting novel to explore in the first place, but seeing the focus shift that little more onto the women – Mina and Lucy – is really gripping. I’m looking forward to this, which has Lucy fleeing Dracula and meeting another woman in 21st Century London who wants freedom as much as she does.

Farzana’s Spite
Felix Graves

Genre: Fantasy
Age: Adult
Format: ebook
Published: 1st May, 2024

I Want to Read This Because it’s queer dark fantasy with a diverse cast going through a traumatic and tumultuous period. Honestly, the premise grabbed me from the moment I first saw this.

As always, if you have read any of these and want to share your thoughts please do so. And let me know what queer books you have on your TBR – tell me about the queer books you were intending to read for June, but are going to prioritise in July instead. Or about the books you’ve read during Pride Month that you’ve really enjoyed.
