Blogtober Day 4: Reading Challenges Update #9

Yes, with the start of another month – and it’s spooky season! – it’s time to do a quick check of where I am with the Reading Challenges I’ve picked up this year. As I mentioned in my last update, I’ve paused the Netflix one for now, as the other two are specific to 2023 so I want to get through as many of them as I can before the end of the year. I’m not doing too bad, but I definitely won’t be taking on three challenges again next year!

Currently Reading

Sleeping Beauty – Briar Rose – a book with a rose on the cover/in the title

This book has both a rose on the cover and in the title. For some reason, from the title – The Rose Daughter – I was almost expecting it to lean more towards YA Fantasy, but it really doesn’t (not a bad thing if it did, it was just different from what I expected!). I’m thoroughly loving it, and although it’s 7 in a series, it can most definitely be read as a standalone. I’ll be going back to check out book 1, anyway.

The Nightmare Before Christmas – Just because I cannot see it, doesn’t believe I can’t believe it – a non-physical book

This one I initially had for “an author I’ve never read before”, but I when I went to listen…well, I realised I had actually listened to one of the author’s previous books as an audiobook! So, I amended it. Conspiracies Uncovered is really interesting so far, and I’m enjoying this delve into various theories and the background to some of the most well-known conspiracy theories out there.

Read

Moana – How Far I’ll Go – A book with a adventure/journey

The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi was absolutely bloody fantastic, and I loved every minute. You can check out my review to see more of my thoughts on this one.

Aladdin – Genie – a book with a blue spine

I found You Say Potato to be a really intriguing, entertaining read with a lot of information conveyed in a fun, accessible way. It’s an absolutely brilliant look at accents, largely focusing on the regional UK accents but with some time devoted to other parts of the English-speaking world, too.

Books to Read: Under the Dome, Mean Baby, The Whistling

Read

Death – A book that explores themes of death/mortality

Selling Dead People’s Things was a great listen, and one I recommend if you have an interest in the antiques/vintage business. It’s got a nice balance between sad, funny, and generally heart-warming moments. I was pleasantly surprised by this one.

The Hierophant Reversed – A coming-of-age story

As Far As You’ll Take Me was a really sweet read about a young, gay man trying to find himself and work out his place in the world. It deals with a lot of heavier topics, so would definitely suggest checking out the content warnings for this one.

Something must have gone wrong somewhere – I had 13 books last month, I’m on 16 complete now, but…I can’t find the third book I apparently read in the last month? My tracking must be off at some point! Hopefully next month it’ll even out and make a little more sense!

Books to Read: The Hollow Kind, Perilous Times, These Burning Stars

Netflix Movies & TV Shows

Books to Read: So You Want to Talk About Race, Daisy Jones & The Six, Hexed

So five more books read in the last month, though I can’t for the life of me figure out the fifth one! A ghost book, maybe? Very odd indeed! But on the plus side I have now hit my yearly target which I’m very happy with, and I can’t wait to see where I end up by the end of December!
