Oh, this was fantastic! Despite not having read the Ms. Marvel comics that come prior to this, I found it super easy to pick up on what was happening and the different dynamics at play throughout. I picked this up at a comic convention after seeing the TV show, and I’m so glad I did! It is a shame we didn’t get this version of Kamala, with her relationship with Iron Man and even Doctor Strange used more for Spider-Man in the MCU, but the series still works as a good introduction even if, of course, the comic book is much better.
As this is an omnibus, there are quite a few stories contained within it, all linking together. First, after New Jersey is attacked by aliens, we go to space with Ms. Marvel and her family, where Ms. Marvel comes across something that might just help her in future adventures. Once we’re back on Earth, we get some breathing space as Kamala and her friends head on a road trip, only to come across something disturbing enough it needs Ms. Marvel to handle it. The arc that follows isn’t one I want to say too much about, as it ties everything else together and if you haven’t read this, it’s worth experiencing it with as little spoilers as possible!
There is one other story at the end, taken from the Ms. Marvel Annual, that doesn’t really tie into the previous ones but was a nice addition with a good glimpse at the wider Marvel world outside of New Jersey.
This is Marvel aimed at the Young Adult crowd, with plenty for older readers to still appreciate. Like I said above, I’m a fan of Kamala’s relationships with other heroes through this, as well as the way her friendships and familial relationships are portrayed. The writing is gripping and engaging, while the artwork is, well, magnificent, as befits our teenage hero.
I already liked Kamala as a character from the MCU TV show, but this book solidifies why she’s such a great character. There’s only the one omnibus for The Magnificent Ms. Marvel, but lucky for me, there’s only one additional volume for this run, which I hope to get asap so I can spend even more time with Kamala.
