Blogtober Day 17: Top Ten Tuesday – Books With Weather Events

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

As it turns out, I don’t have a whole load of books with weather events in the titles, not from ones I’ve read anyway! So I thought I’d do something slightly different with this one, and highlight five books I’ve read, and five on my TBR. Some good titles here, too.

Read

I Have Asked to be Where No Storms Come by Gwendolyn N. Nix

Format: ebook
Genre: Horror – Fantasy
Published: July 26th, 2022
Review

I didn’t actually rate this one that highly, but that was purely because I didn’t click with it as much as I would have liked. I do however think it’s a really good book that absolutely deserves to find its audience. It’s kind of sprawling, as I noted in my review it’s kind of surreal fantasy elements with a dollop of Western. The prose itself is really good too, and I think if it grabs your attention, it’s well worth a read.

The Sandman, Vol 4: Season of Mists

Format: Paperback
Genre: Horror – Fantasy
Published: January 1st, 1990
Review

To me, this and Saga are the absolute best graphic novel series’ I’ve ever read. I love The Sandman, every volume, and this is no exception. Once I finish my reread of Saga, I think I’m going to have to go back and reread Sandman, at least until I can get my hands on the next volumes!

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

Format: Paperback
Genre: Horror – Fantasy
Published: June 19th, 2001
Review

There are of course multiple editions of this excellent novel, but quite a few of them show lightening in some form. This one is the mass market paperback version from HarperTorch, for anyone interested, though the last version I read was the audiobook. This is one of the few books I’ll return to in different formats, simply because I love the story and Gaiman’s writing so much.

Black Rainbow Edited by Scott Savino

Format: ebook
Genre: Horror
Published: August 6th, 2019
Review

Even years after reading this, it remains one of those books I think of when I think of great horror, and great anthologies. It was one of the first books I reviewed over at Divination Hollow, and I felt very pleased to be provided with it – at the time I wasn’t as deep into indie horror as I am now, and it served as the absolute perfect gateway drug. If you can get your hands on this, you really should.

La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman

Format: Hardback
Genre: Fantasy
Published: October 19th, 2017

This is going back to before I used to review everything I could get my hands on. I love this cover though, and the turmoil of the storm. Loved this book too, and the chance to return to this world. I never did pick up the next one, but I really should at some point.

To Be Read

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Format: Audiobook
Genre: Fantasy
Published: June 4th, 2013

I read the first book in the trilogy and wasn’t hugely impressed, but just about intrigued enough to see where this goes, so I got this one with an Audible credit. Not quite sure when I’ll get around to it, but I am hoping it’s better than book 1.

Storm Born by Christine Pope

Format: ebook
Genre: Fantasy – Romance
Published: April 23rd, 2020

This looks fun. And it’s got plenty of the stuff I sort of love – a witch with a witch hunter love interest and other witch hunters on her tail. If it’s written well, I’ll likely enjoy this one!

It Always Snows on Mistletoe SquareAli McNamara

Format: ebook
Genre: General
Published: October 12th, 2023

Oh this looks so cute, and we’re getting ever closer to the time of the year when I start my Christmas reading. I can’t wait. I love as the weather gets colder and Christmas gets closer all the cheesy films and books I can indulge in, and they do tend to make the cold feel not so bad. Let’s hope this one hits the spot, too.

Never the Wind by Francesco Dimitri

Format: ebook
Genre: Fantasy
Published: January 1st, 2022

This is one of those books that’s been sitting on my TBR for quite a while. Not for any other reason than I just haven’t got around to it yet, but it looks really intriguing. Need to try and get to this sooner rather than later, I think.

Under the Rainbow by Celia Laskey

Format: ebook
Genre: Contemporary
Published: March 2nd, 2020

This is another one I should have got to before now, but I think it’s one I’m going to have to really be in the mood for. Maybe I’ll try and read it before Pride Month next year, but we’ll see. It sounds intriguing enough, and I’m excited to read it at some point, whenever that may be.

Have you read or plan to read any of these? I feel like it’s quite a good mix of different books, and definitely showcases my wide tastes in reading, which is always a plus!
