Question 1: You hear a strange noise in the night – the monsters got inside! Which book character would you choose to protect you from harm?

Faith from S.H. Cooper’s The Ungodly Duology. I haven’t read the full duology yet, but I did read The Festering Ones many years ago, and Faith York is a badass. I’d definitely trust her to protect me.

Question 2: You go on vacation and your hotel is located right next to a cemetery. Which book character do you really hope is not hiding in the shadows?

Junior, from Under the Dome. I’m reading it at the moment and he is an example of the kind of character King is excellent at crafting – all too human, but very terrifying. He’s a very unpredictable character, and though his father is dangerous, it’s Junior’s erratic behaviour that really scares me.

Question 3: It’s a particularly cold night and you decide to stay inside. Which three book characters would you like to spend a trivia quiz and board game night with?

Dreckly from The Rose Daughter, as she’s smart enough to survive and hide for as long as she has and I think she’d have some great stories to tell between rounds. Amina al-Sirafi, from The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, because she’d be so fun to play games with and like Dreckly would have some excellent tales. And finally, Rose Darling from Camp Damascus, because she’s very smart and I think she’d appreciate a fun, easy going night after everything she’s been through.

Question 4: Time for a big adventure! The scary book you pick transports you into its world. Where do you end up?

I want to go camping in Kate’s campground in The Man With No Shadow. I should be fine, I mean I’m a stickler for rules and I tend to follow them so I’d listen to her, and trust her to keep me safe. Hopefully. Camping always has risks, right? These ones are just more interesting than most!

Question 5: No Halloween without Trick or Treat-ing! Which book character do you think has the sweetest tooth?

I’m going to go with Mika Moon from The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches – I can’t remember if she eats many sweet things during the book, but I can imagine her enjoying quite a few sweet snacks!

Question 6: The fairies are angry and want a sacrifice from your bookshelf. Which scary book has to go and why?

The Whistling. It’s the last disappointing horror book I read.

Question 7: You decide you feel more autumnal rather than Halloween-y today. Which book setting would you choose for a more cosy and less scary vibe?

Graves Glen from The Ex Hex and The Kiss Curse. (And it wasn’t until I noted that down and reread the original tag’s answer I noticed we picked the same place…) It’s just got such a cosy vibe to it and they know how to celebrate the spooky season. I can’t wait for the next book. Either that or Nowhere House from The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches

Question 8: The witch is cooking up a spell in her cauldron and you have to add one magic ingredient. Which item from a book are you adding to the mixture?

One of Aisling’s cakes from #Sweets for Love, because there’s magic in baking and it would make it taste absolutely amazing.

Question 9: You get to decide which bookish place to visit for Halloween. Which book setting is the scariest – and gets crossed off the list?

Camp Damascus. Freaking terrifying.

Question 10: The big day is finally here: it’s Halloween! Which book character do you dress up as, and what would be part of your outfit?

Lila Bard, from V.E. Schwab’s Shades of Magic series. Because I love Lila and it would be an amazing excuse to dress up in a pirate costume – a long, black coat, tall black boots, and red trousers, with a hat and red gloves to complete the look.


This was a lot of fun to do, and I definitely recommend it if you’re looking for a fun Halloween tag to do this month!
