It is that time of the year when I currently have my head buried in Christmas books, so I thought it would be a good time to go into why I love them so much! Christmas and other holidays can, of course, crop up in any genre, but romance really has the lion’s share of books for this time of the year, and as it is mostly in romance I read these books, I’ll be focusing on these, but if you do have recommendations for Christmas books in other genres, I’d love to hear them! Maybe I can get them read in time for next year.

Cute and Fluffy!
The main reason I read romances anyway, but festive ones especially are almost guaranteed to be cute and fluffy. I’m sure there’s ‘darker’ Christmas romances out there, but the ones I’ve read so far tend to keep things fairly light and adorable, even if some do manage to tackle slightly heavier themes.
Festive Joy
It’s to be expected with these books, really. The thing is, this time of the year isn’t always easy. Actually, it’s never easy, but sometimes it’s harder than other years, and it can get to the point where it almost feels like you lose sight of what Christmas and the holidays are about, or at least forget what they might mean to you. Some of these books are a really good reminder that it’s not about the presents or massive gatherings or anything, but more the quiet, sweet moments with loved ones.
Warming on Cold Days
Yeah, this is a crucial thing for me. I love feeling those warm and fuzzy feelings when it’s cold and miserable outside! A really good festive book makes me forget the weather and the long stretch to something warmer – they just make me smile.
Magic
Festive books often contain a little element of magic, even if it’s Contemporary Romance, and it makes things feel just that bit more special.
Humour
Festive books usually have quite a bit of humour to them, even if it’s just small moments where an unruly pet knocks down a tree, or there’s some misunderstandings around traditions. Or you have books like The Sh!te Before Christmas, which totally embraces the chaos of the holiday season for comedic effect.
I would love to read more festive books in different genres, so if you have any recommendations please do send them my way. What are some of your favourite festive books? What sort of books do you like reading this time of the year?
